Annual Trends in Foreign Visitors to Japan

On January 20, 2026, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced that the number of foreign visitors to Japan is projected to reach approximately 42.7 million.
The Japan Tourism Agency has set a target of 60 million international visitors by 2030 and is implementing related measures. The figure of 60 million international visitors would rank Japan fourth globally based on 2023 data (UNWTO 2023 data).

Looking at the breakdown of visitors to Japan by nationality in 2025, we see that the so-called East Asian neighboring countries—South Korea, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong—account for 65% of the total, or about two-thirds.
Adding the United States to these East Asian neighboring countries brings the total to about 73%.
Inbound visitors from Southeast Asian countries have also been increasing recently, with tourists from Thailand exceeding 1 million and other Southeast Asian countries surpassing 500,000.
